The Braidwood Central School Archives proudly boasts and preserves the rich history of one of the oldest schools in New South Wales. This special campus was founded under the provisions of the National Education Board Act of 1848. Braidwood Public School opened its doors on the 7th August 1849, over 170 years ago.
Our Archives exists to preserve this rich history, the stories of our teachers and students. The archive also embraces the stories of the most of small district public and half time school which once flourished in our district.
Braidwood Central School archives contain a remarkable range of historical artefacts, books and collections.
We express our gratitude to ex teacher Mrs Pauline Godfrey who personally collected and archived material some 50 years ago. She was ably assisted by our historically attuned librarians including Mrs Noela Garner and Mrs Sue Murray. These special keepers of books and material were also supported by very effective library assistants such as Mrs Margaret Lennard and Mrs Linda Bunn, who, over many years, meticulously arranged, archived and labelled so many of the archives.
During the Sesquicentenary celebration of 1999, the collection was expanded by Mrs Jill Clarke and Mrs Lisa Pearson. Along with author Mary Ann Bunn, these ladies facilitated the collection to expand it through personal donations given generously by former students, staff and families.
The ample array of material includes:
- Student work, reports, certificates and prizes
- School publications including The Tchurunga (The Magazine of Braidwood Central School) 1962-67, various Annual School Magazines and an array of Musical Production Booklets.
- Photographs, slides and negatives
- Audio visual material
- School uniforms and badges
- Staff and student records
- Honour boards, achievement awards, trophies and memorabilia
- Uniform paraphernalia and textiles including shirts, ties, blazers, uniforms and flags
- Maps, plans, drawings and paintings
- Curriculum material and lesson plans.
- Information and content from our archives collection is used for a wide range of purposes across the school and our community, including reunions, educational projects, building programs, development and alumni events, and school publications.
We are currently working on digitising many of the archives materials.
